How PSgrader Works

01

Scores Don't Drift

Ask a chatbot to grade the same essay twice and you may get two different scores — that's score drift, the inevitable product of grading by feel. Stability is forced by the completeness of the evaluation system: scoring is locked onto five fixed dimensions, each one placed against calibration anchors before a point value is assigned, leaving the model no room to improvise; and the total is machine-verified — if the five dimensions don't add up, the entire evaluation is discarded and rerun. Under these constraints, the same essay converges to the same narrow band; the full evaluation follows fixed internal rules to arrive at the final value.

Your score changes only when your essay does — that's what makes “revise and re-evaluate” meaningful.

No Flattery, No Manufactured Flaws

Researchers have a name for AI's habit of pleasing users: sycophancy — models are trained to prioritize what you want to hear. Anthropic's experiment is blunt: the same piece of writing gets noticeably warmer feedback when introduced as “I wrote this” than as “a friend wrote this.” A generic AI's praise is, in large part, for the person asking — not for the essay. Our rubric wasn't improvised from experience: it is distilled from more than 110,000 successful essays across every tier. Held to that rubric, the AI cannot distort in either direction — upward, even praise must point to the exact sentence in your essay; downward, a dimension with no significant weaknesses says so plainly: “nothing worth editing in this dimension.” Invented problems are worse than missed ones: they spend your revision budget where nothing needs fixing.

No “the structure could be tighter” style of empty truisms — every comment maps to a specific sentence you can check anytime.

The compass spun, and so did I — north was never the point.

AI Tells, Caught Before Application Season

The risk of AI tells isn't rumor — it's written policy: the Common App treats submitting the substantive content or output of an AI platform as application fraud; Brown and Georgetown restrict AI use in applications; Yale states that admission can be rescinded over it. And beyond policy, admissions officers who read thousands of essays each season develop an instinct for the “AI voice” that arrives earlier than any detector — the same sentence patterns, the polished but soulless structures, recognizable at a glance. Rather than submitting and hoping, know where you stand first: the evaluation examines your essay's language texture, and a pronounced AI writing style is flagged in the report and reflected in the score. This is a signal, not a verdict — whether and how to revise remains your call.

Detectors produce false positives; policies don't bend — “reads like a human wrote it” is the only answer that's safe on both sides.

Tiers and indicator colors describe an essay's relative position in the applicant pool and do not constitute an admission guarantee; specific score lines are internal standards and are not published.

FAQ

Understand formats, competitiveness tiers, and word limits before you start.

What is the difference between a rapid and comprehensive evaluation?

A rapid assessment provides a preliminary tier and core recommendations. A comprehensive report adds deeper dimensional analysis, supporting quotations, and prioritized guidance. See the chosen product for exact inclusions.

Do UC campus references predict admission?

No. Campus names help illustrate relative PIQ essay competitiveness, not admission odds. UC campuses review applicants holistically using the complete application.

Do all three application systems use the same word limit?

No. The official Common App personal essay limit is 650 words; first-year UC PIQs allow up to 350 words per answer; UCAS uses character counts. Draft-evaluation allowances on this site are separate from official limits.
