Who Should Review Your PS? DIY, Peers, Agencies, and AI Tools Compared

Updated 2026-09-17

This guide is about the US Common App Personal Statement; for the UK UCAS format, see How to Write the UCAS Three Questions.

The short answer: there's no single right choice — it depends on your stage and what information you're missing. Missing perspective? Find perspective. Missing a standard? Find a standard. Missing execution? Find execution. Figure out which one you lack, then pick the channel.

Four channels, one table

ChannelCostSpeedPerspective valueMain risk
Self-editing (DIY)FreeInstantLow — you can't hear your own voiceBlind spots stay blind; drafts converge to bland
Seniors / teachersFree to ~$50DaysMedium — real but one-sample experienceSurvivorship bias: "this worked for my X admit"
Agencies$1,000–$10,000+Weeks to monthsHigh — but extremely variableAssembly-line templates, ghostwriting risk
AI evaluation tools$10–$100MinutesMedium-high — consistent and repeatableDiagnoses, doesn't write; judgment ≠ execution

DIY: free, but structurally blind

The core problem isn't skill — you literally cannot hear your own voice; every sentence sounds reasonable to its author. DIY works as maintenance between rounds of outside feedback, never as the only feedback source.

Seniors & teachers: real, but n=1

A senior's advice is valuable because it's real — they actually got in. But they know why their essay worked, not why yours doesn't. Copying a senior's winning template onto your own essay is the most common invisible injury. Great for experiential questions (interviews, school lists, timelines); risky for line-editing your essay.

Agencies: high ceiling, high variance

A good agency's end-to-end planning can be worth the price. Bad ones push essays through template pipelines — or worse, ghostwrite, which is a red-line risk as authenticity screening gets stricter. Three questions before signing: who exactly edits my essay (name and background)? How many rounds, against what standard? Do you "guarantee admission" (walk away if yes)?

AI evaluation: consistent, instant, repeatable

Take Personal Statement Grader: a report in minutes, five-dimension signal lights plus a competitiveness tier under one fixed framework, and a cheap re-test after every revision — a "revision dashboard" no human channel offers. The boundary is equally clear: it diagnoses and directs, but doesn't write for you. The final words must be the student's own — that's a principle, and a hard requirement inside the "authentic voice" dimension itself.

A recommended combination

  • Ideation: DIY + one AI evaluation to set a baseline (know your tier);
  • Revision: re-test every 2–3 drafts to watch the signals move; bring in a teacher for structure when stuck;
  • Final stretch: full self-check (word count, risk flags, voice), then a revision comparison to confirm the last draft beats the previous one everywhere;
  • If budget allows and you need full-process planning, consider an agency — but keep writing the essay yourself.

Not sure what the feedback looks like? Read the sample reports first.

FAQ

Can AI evaluation replace a human teacher?

Not fully — and it shouldn't. AI is strong at consistency, speed, and unlimited re-testing: a revision dashboard. Humans are strong at knowing you as a person and surfacing story angles you couldn't see. They complement each other: use AI to watch the signals, humans to break through ideas.

What's the risk of an agency ghostwriting my essay?

It's a red line. Schools are increasingly alert to 'too smooth' ghostwritten text, and mismatches between your essay's voice and the rest of your application can trigger authenticity review — consequences range from rejection to rescinded offers. Rule out any service that 'guarantees admission.'

If I can only afford one thing, what should it be?

Start with one AI evaluation to set a baseline (tens of dollars, results in minutes). The five-dimension signal lights usually reveal that what you lack isn't 'more advice' but targeted work on one or two dimensions — spend there.
